Drive west down the Western Highway (Ballarat Road) and after you cross the Duke Street and Ballarat Road intersection and all the way to Deer Park many of the residential streets branching from Ballarat Road are common place for homes constructed in this era. Many of these homes were built on slightly larger allotments of their respective suburbs.

These homes lacked much charisma and ornate features because of the high expense of building material due to their shortage of supply in the post war period. Albion and Ardeer are two suburbs which were basically constructed entirely during this era.

Distinguishing features include:

External

  • Concrete roof tiles
  • Steel window frames
  • Weatherboard or cream brick
Internal

  • Plaster boards
  • Small cornices & trimmings
  • Dark brown timber trimmings
  • Polished timber floor, carpet and linoleum
