Where Were We Living? > Art Deco 1940s

Main Photo Art Deco

In my opinion, the beginning of the conventional look. These homes show some of the flair and extravagance of earlier era's in a toned down fashion, smaller cornices, lower ceilings, narrower timber work etc. Many of the homes built over the next four decades embody much of the same feel to the styling of the Art Deco. Many of this style of home were built on the fringe of the inner western suburbs i.e. West Footscray, West Yarraville. Yet travel to suburbs that are 15km to 20km from Melbourne and they were commonly the 1st homes built in that particular suburb and hence only a short walk to all the central shops.
